Where to Eat in Nyali: A Short Guide for Guests

Mount Kenya Road puts you close to more good food than you’ll get through in a week. This isn’t an exhaustive list — Nyali adds new cafés and closes old ones every year — but it’s a fair spread of what’s within a short walk or a quick taxi, from a proper sit-down dinner to the place you go for coffee before the beach.

Tamarind Mombasa — the special-occasion dinner

Tamarind sits on the water in Nyali in a Moorish-style dhow building, and it’s the name most people in Mombasa reach for first when the occasion calls for it. The kitchen leans seafood — prawns, crab, whatever’s come in that day — with French and Swahili influences running through the menu. Go for sunset if you can get the timing right, and book ahead, especially on a weekend.

Cafesserie — breakfast, coffee, somewhere to sit for a while

Part bakery, part café, part restaurant, with a Nyali branch that does the job well. Good coffee, proper pastries, and a menu broad enough to cover breakfast, a working lunch, or just a slice of cake and a long conversation. An easy choice on a morning when you don’t want to think too hard about it.

Java House — reliable, and open when you need it

There’s a Java House on Links Road, and it does exactly what the chain does everywhere in Kenya: solid coffee, familiar breakfasts, burgers, and a menu that keeps kids and fussy eaters happy too. Not a destination in itself, but a dependable one when you want food fast without a production.

Tapas Gold (formerly Tapas Cielo) — for a night out

On the top floor of Nyali Centre, this is the bar-restaurant most people mean when they say they’re “going out” in Nyali — tapas, grills, a serious cocktail list, and a crowd that shows up properly dressed. It gets busy and loud later in the evening, so go earlier if you want to actually taste the food. A minimum age policy applies, so treat it as an adults’ night rather than a family one.

10 Street — small, late, unfussy

A small, intimate spot near City Mall with a short menu — burgers, chips, fish, chicken, shawarma — done well rather than done extensively. Useful to know about because it keeps late hours, so it’s the answer when everything else in Nyali has closed for the night.

Cool Beans — the neighbourhood café

Tucked in near the Shell station on Links Road, Cool Beans is more local than touristy: pastries, a proper breakfast menu, sandwiches, and coffee from a kitchen that clearly cares about it. A good stop on the way to or from the beach.

None of this is more than a short drive from the apartment, and most of it’s a walk if the heat isn’t too much.
